HEARS ANNUAL LUNCH AND TALK
Sunday 2 July 2017
Doors open at 12.00pm, lunch at 1.00pm
For many years HEARS members’ enjoyed an annual Sunday lunch, followed by a talk from our President. Last year we revived this tradition, bringing together again our members and friends from across Hertfordshire and Essex.
We have a new venue, the Stapleford Abbots Village Hall.
Following a leisurely lunch we will settle down and listen to a talk delivered by our Joint Presidents, Brenda and Elphin Watkins, about farm buildings in our county.
To help with catering, we would appreciate it if you would please book as soon as possible, although if you suddenly find you are able to come the week before our lunch, we can always ask the caterers to prepare an extra meal, or two.
Our caterers will be preparing a two-course meal for us. We found last year that it is best to come hungry! Please note that there is no bar and we are not allowed to bring our own alcoholic drinks to comply with licensing legislation but there will be water on the table and soft drinks will be available.
The menu will be: Boeuf Bourginon, Celebration Salmon en Croute, filled with smoked salmon, dill, capers and spinach, and there will be a vegetarian option, all accompanied by Medley of Fresh Vegetables. This will be followed by Lemon Tart or Summer Fruit Pavlova.
Booking forms are available from firstname.lastname@example.org.
This is always a very sociable event, so we do hope you will want to attend. Friends, relatives and partners are very welcome to join us too.
If you have any allergies, please let us know at the time of booking and we will let the caterers know. £21 for members, £23 for non members.
COACH VISIT TO SANDWICH AND RICHBOROUGH
Saturday 19 August 2017
After pick-ups at Loughton, Great Dunmow, and Bishop’s Stortford we will travel to our destination with a comfort stop on the way.
Our coach will pick up at Great Dunmow (near War Memorial) at 7.30am, Bishop’s Stortford (Station Road layby) at 8am, and at Loughton (Traps Hill car park) at 8.30am. We will travel via the M2 with a brief comfort stop at Medway Services.
We will arrive at the Quay, Sandwich, at approximately 10.45am. A brief walk will take us to the Guildhall, where there will be time for coffee before a guided walk round the town (length two hours). The charge for the walk is included in the price for the day. If you prefer not to join the walk, there is much to see in the town centre (street maps will be available). The Guildhall Museum (free) will be open 10.30am-12.30pm and 2-6pm. Four historic churches will also be open. Strand Street has one of the longest rows of timber-framed houses in Europe. Along the river Stour are a toll bridge and medieval barbican. Round the other three sides of the town run earth ramparts with a tree-lined walk on top. ‘The Salutation’, designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens (now a hotel) has gardens influenced by Gertrude Jekyll (gardens open 10-5pm: admission £7-00 is not included in the price for the day). We will leave Sandwich at 3.45pm.
At 4pm we will arrive at Richborough Roman Fort. Admission is not included in the price for the day but is free to English Heritage members. For non-members the standard adult price is £6-20 (£5-60 concessions), but we will be entitled to a 15% group discount. The entry price includes an audio guide. Richborough was in use throughout the Roman occupation, from 43 to 410 AD. The site includes the remains of a fort and an amphitheatre. It has two toilets and a shop selling snacks and hot and cold drinks. We will leave Richborough at 5pm, and make another short stop on the return journey at Medway Services.
If you wish to attend and to book a place on this trip, please email
David Stevenson (HEARS Secretary), email@example.com as soon as you can.
